Halloween DIY: Craft Ghoulish Candles as Favors

Get into the spooky spirit of the season, with creative Halloween party favors with an elegant flair! Not the usual cutesy creepy style, and definitely not the ghoulish gore approach. Instead, dare we call it the “chic chills” look?

This Halloween party favor is actually a large candle packaged in orange fabric and embellished with a black ribbon “web” and a black butterfly. It’s so easy to put together, you’ll almost feel like Wanda just waving her magic wand! But in the absence of spells and potions, you may as well follow our tutorial!

Step 1: Prepare Your Materials

Halloween Candle Project for Favors

Black satin ribbon and gold separator beads are all you will need to form the creepy “web” surrounding each candle.

Gather these items for your Halloween candle favors:

  1. white candles from Bellenza, preferably the pillar type
  2. organza wraps from Bellenza or any similar sheer fabric circles in burnt orange or rust
  3. black satin ribbon, 1/4″ wide from Amazon
  4. gold separator beads (plain like these or patterned like these) from Amazon
  5. black fabric butterflies from Amazon (also available at craft or sewing supply stores), or substitutes described in Step 4
  6. gold and/or orange glitter from Amazon
  7. glue
  8. scissors

Step 2: “Spin” the Web

Embellish the black ribbon with the gold beads, tying knots to keep the beads spaced at desired intervals.

  1. Take the black ribbon and thread it through the gold separator beads.
  2. Tie knots in the ribbon on either side of each bead to keep it in place.
  3. Leave a gap of approximately 2 1/2 inches between each bead.
  4. Estimate how much ribbon you will have to embellish with beads to complete all the candle favors you plan to give. (You can always add more as needed.)

Step 3: Assemble the Favor Packaging

  1. Enclose each candle in a fabric circle made of orange organza or any similar fabric, and tie the wrap shut securely with matching ribbon ties. If you prefer to use paper, try colored tissue wrapping paper in orange, green, or black.
  2. Take the beaded black ribbon and wind it around each wrapped candle in a random fashion, resulting in a decorative criss-cross pattern.
  3. Secure the ends of the ribbon to ensure that it stays in place even when handled.

Step 4: Add Faux Black Butterflies or Moths as a Finishing Touch

Bundle up each candle in an orange wrap, wind the beaded ribbon around it, and attach a black butterfly as a final “frightful” accent to complete your elegant Halloween party favors.

  1. Add some party sparkle to the black fabric butterflies by dabbing their wings lightly with glue, then sprinkling gold glitter over them.
  2. Substitute A: If all you can find in the stores are fabric butterflies of other colors, simply spray paint them black. Then, add the gold glitter as above.
  3. Substitute B: If no fabric butterflies are available at all, cut your own out of black card stock using a stencil and a crafting cutter. Then, sprinkle on the gold glitter as well.
  4. Attach the decorated butterflies to the wrapped candles, add a gold favor tag to each, and they’re ready to give!

How’s that for a “chilling” yet chic favor idea to give at your Halloween party?
