Indy 500 Party Ideas: Decorations, Food, Dessert

Rev up your engines for Dad’s special day with these race-inspired party elements. Great ways to capture both the thrill and the traditions of the Indianapolis 500.
An Indy 500 Race Themed Birthday Celebration for Dad's 60th.

Race Day Decorations

Usher guests into the party venue with a cool race track floor runner (4) that mimics the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (in a modest way!).

Overhead, hang a race-themed birthday banner (2) in traditional black and white checks with red, and assemble eye-catching centerpieces of checkered racing flags (3) in mini buckets.

Then, wow the celebrant with the showpiece of the party decor, a 3-tier NASCAR Brickyard 500 race birthday cake (1) that you can have custom designed for the occasion.

“Fast Food” for the Party Menu

“Fast food” as in race-inspired, get it? Plan easy to serve and super-flavorful party fare that pays homage to the Indy 500 and its home city!

Start off with your choice of Indiana’s’ famed burgers (7) (the source post offers great suggestions). Accompany these with a side of Sink the Biz Fries (9), an iconic creation at Nick’s English Hut near Indiana University, tossed in a special mix of spices plus Pecorino Romano.

Another sure hit would be Chili Dogs (8) made with Slow Cooker Chili Dog Sauce, then enjoyed with bottles of ice cold root beer. Plus, Roasted Shrimp Cocktail (5) served with a zesty dip made with chili sauce, ketchup, horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and hot sauce.

Then, in the time-honored tradition of the Indy 500 winners as started by 1936 champion Louie Mayer, prepare a Victory Milk station (6) for guests to refresh themselves. And for a simple themed dessert, pass around trays of “Hoosier cookies” — actually a cookie version of Indiana’s well-loved sugar cream pie (10). Have a separate batch packaged as party favors, too.

Happy 60th, Dad!
