A bridal shower centerpiece doesn’t always have to be a flower arrangement. In fact, finding non-traditional elements such as candy sachets can make unique pieces for crafting a charming centerpiece. This project is ideal for a decorating a bridesmaid’s luncheon or afternoon tea party.

Classic ideas often provide the best inspiration especially when given an updated look. For creating a fun DIY centerpiece, we searched the globe for inspirational ideas and placed a modern spin on an Italian favor - popularly known as the Italian “Torte Bomboniere,” which consists of several layers of triangular-shaped cake boxes. Each of these cake boxes are stacked along side each other to form several layers of a large cake. Instead of using individual cake boxes to form the centerpiece, we made use of ordinary boxes and gave them a new life by decorating them with pretty floral sachets, ribbons, and candy. You can make this simple centerpiece with boxes that are taken from old appliances, as well as clothing, or gift boxes, that you may have collected over the years.
Materials you will need:
- Boxes - in three different sizes
- Removable tape
- Tape measure
- Scissors - preferably one that can cut fabric ribbons well
- Candy - saltwater taffy in pastel colors
- 13 candy sachets
- White card stock paper -cut-out into a 3″ x 2″ card
- Marker pen
Step 1: Collect and layout all of your materials on a table

For this project, you will need to use three different box sizes to create a tiered look for the cake centerpiece
Step 2: Determine the length of the ribbon that will be used to decorate the sides of the box

Start by measuring the perimeter of each box, so that you can determine the length of ribbon that will be attached to the sides of the boxes. Here are the corresponding box sizes for this project:
- 1st level (base) - Box size: 12″ x 13″ x 4″
- 2nd level (mid-section) - Box size: 7″ x 7″ x 4″
- 3rd level (top-section) - Box size: 4″ x 4″ x 2″
Step 3: Place your cut ribbons around the boxes and then begin stacking the boxes according to size

Once you have determined the perimeter of the boxes, cut the ribbons and tape them around the side of the boxes (at the base). After this step, start stacking the boxes one at a time. To hold each box in place as a stack - tape the sides of the box to the base using transparent (removable) tape.
Step 4: Add your decorations when the boxes have been stacked and centered properly

Once the boxes have been stacked properly in place, start adding the candy sachets first. Place a flower petal bag at the very top to serve as the cake topper. Optionally, you can put a small tent card at the top to represent the name of the table.
Step 5: Fill-in any remaining gaps with candy or a filling of your choice

Place the candies around the opening areas located on the side of the box. Once you’ve completed the layout of the candies, you can also scatter additional candies around the base of the box for a “natural look”.
Here is an alternate view of the centerpiece:

To illustrate a top-view of the centerpiece, look at the picture below that shows the number of sachets that you will need. Also, you can add an extra decorative flair by spreading out the candies at the base of the centerpiece (i.e., around the centerpiece as it sits on the table).
Tips To Take with You:
- Rectangular or square boxes are great to work with, but you can also use circular or octagonal boxes to create an original shape for the cake centerpiece.
- If you want to create a grand centerpiece, just use bigger-sized boxes. Remember - the bigger the boxes, the grander the centerpiece will look on the table.
- When searching for boxes, you can also use old boxes of electronic appliances or gift store boxes that you’ve kept around the house. You can always cover them up by using gift wrapping paper. Moreover, when selecting a design for the wrapping paper, find one that coordinates well either with the color palette or theme of the event.
- For this project, the length of your ribbons will depend on the perimeter (i.e., total length of all sides) of the boxes
- Use ribbons with an intricate pattern or special material. This will add a special texture to the overall look of the centerpiece. A pattern such as toile or paisley would look superb for a tea party table.
- You can also use confetti, petals, or faux pearls to decorate the centerpiece instead of candy. For that added flair, try using fluffy marabou feathers in white or cream.
- For adding additional color, find candy that comes in the color scheme of the bridal shower. For instance, Jordan almonds, mini heart candied chocolates, heart-shaped almond dragees, or dutch mints in pretty pastel colors of pink, lilac, and green are possible choices.
- Select alternating colors of flower petal bags for producing a festive appearance.
- For a colorful table card, use a bright marker in a cheerful color such as pink, baby blue, or fuchsia.
