With everyone now on the environmental bandwagon, party decorating is not exempt. In fact, party planning offers wonderful opportunities to reuse discarded items, improvise with existing materials, and combine home-made with store-bought.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

As one of our contributions to the global environment effort, then, we present this super-easy DIY project for transforming plastic soda bottles into decorative vases. These were made for a Warhol-inspired party<\/a>\u2014as you can see from the wildly colored pop art design! But the same procedure can be easily tweaked as needed to suit your own party theme or color palette. Happy recycling!<\/p>\n

Crafting Your “Soda Pop Art”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Step 1 and 2:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Gather<\/p>\n

Step 1<\/strong> Gather these materials: empty soda or water bottles, scraps of patterned wrapping paper, colored tissue paper, a paintbrush, a bowl of white crafter’s glue thinned with water, and clear lacquer or varnish (optional).<\/p>\n

Step 2<\/strong> Brush a section of the bottle with some white glue, then press paper scraps against it. Apply more glue to the outer surface of the paper so that it adheres to the bottle.<\/p>\n

Step 3 and 4:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Continue<\/p>\n

Step 3<\/strong> Continue adding paper scraps, brushing each piece with glue underneath and over it. For our “pop art” look, we intentionally overlapped and angled the pieces to mimic that dynamic ’60s art style.<\/em><\/p>\n

Step 4<\/strong> Apply a final top coat of glue over the entire bottle to seal the edges of the paper pieces. Allow to dry thoroughly for several hours. (Optional: Apply a layer of clear lacquer or varnish to serve as a sealant and to create a glossy finish.)<\/p>\n

Step 5 and 6:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Step 5<\/strong> Add any final trimmings you wish, in keeping with the look you’re aiming for. Ours was a glittery silver pipe cleaner wound around the bottle’s mouth (for no particular reason, except Andy Warhol might have approved!).<\/p>\n

Step 6<\/strong> Repeat the whole process with as many bottles as you need for your party decor. Then, step back and admire your work!<\/p>\n
