Autumn is arguably the best-loved season for celebrations—weddings included. All those rich colors, fascinating textures, and that hint of chill in the air make for a perfect partying mood! With so much celebrating going on, though, you may find yourself in a decorating bind. How do you capture that special fall-time flair at your wedding without doing exactly what everyone else is doing? We suggest incorporating a modern touch to turn the usual rustic elements into contemporary accents.
Let’s see how these styling finds can inspire your Big Day!
Go for gold decor accents! Gilding fallen leaves to make place cards (1) is a pretty idea. Or you could dip glasses or vases in gold paint, set out gold flatware, slip napkins into gold rings, make votive holders encrusted with gold beads, or scatter gold confetti!
Select stylized wedding stationery. From your wedding invitations (2) to your ceremony programs, menu cards, and table numbers, go for a modern look, too. Consider stylized graphics, unusual colors, and organic materials like handmade paper, wood, burlap, jute, raffia, and the like.
Bring the outdoors in…but with a twist. Fall is all about natural, woodsy elements, right? Gather some, like twigs, acorns, pine cones, wheat, and the like. Then, use these to jazz up otherwise simple items like candle holders (3), wreaths, lanterns, centerpieces, escort cards, and table numbers.
Choose a non-traditional cake. Naked cakes (4) are quite the rage at today’s rustic weddings. Or you could select a trendy handpainted creation with stylized floral designs. Fall weddings are great occasions, too, for pie bars, cupcake towers, midnight snack bars, trail mix bars, and even donut stations in place of the traditional wedding cake.
Prepare memorable favors. The field is actually wide open for selecting fall wedding favors. The possibilities are endless! But edible treats are always welcome—particularly the ever-evolving S’mores (5), as well as homebaked goodies made with fall-inspired ingredients.
Create contemporary centerpieces. Take a modern slant to these table focal points. Consider unusual flowers and orchids, and even vegetables like asparagus, kale, and mushrooms creatively arranged (6), maybe a hanging display of seasonal fruits, painted gourds, floating candles in rustic containers, or wheat bunches in modern cube vases.
Offer guests a warm welcome. Make the most of autumn’s naturally cozy feel to it. Create a quaint welcome display, using charming props like a vintage cart serving wine and cocktails for guests (7), a wheelbarrow, large bushel baskets, maybe even a vintage bicycle.
Set up a dessert table using ‘re-purposed’ items. Be resourceful and pull out furniture pieces and accessories from around your house to assemble a charming dessert display. Like these chocolate bars displayed in wooden crates or shelving (8), think small cabinets, drawers, spice racks, chopping boards, kitchen stools, basket trays, recipe boxes, and the like.
Add some unexpected color. Beyond the traditional oranges, browns, and yellows, why not toss in purple or plum in your bouquet wrap (9), chartreuse in your centerpieces, royal blue in your place settings. Or perhaps even opt for a totally non-autumn palette for a real styling surprise!
