Get out your scissors. It\u2019s time for some fun this holiday season<\/a>! Our crafty project gives old newspapers a whole new use as attractive yet eco-friendly gift packaging. They’re such a visual treat\u2014they can actually double up as your table decorations or even centerpieces at a rehearsal dinner party with that Modern Art feel. Inspired by colorful mosaics and the traditional craft of decoupage, come and see what unique packaging you can make with materials readily available right in your home!<\/p>\n

All it takes is 5 easy steps…<\/p>\n

Step #1 – Gather the materials you will need.<\/h2>\n

\"Christmas<\/p>\n

Set out scissors; old newspapers, magazines, calendars, and brochures; excess gift wrap paper; Mod Podge\u00ae (available at most craft or art supply stores) or white glue; a paint brush and bowl for the glue.<\/p>\n

Step #2 – Prepare the “mosaic” squares.<\/h2>\n

Cut the magazine pages, calendars, brochures, and gift wrap paper into uniform 1″ x 1″ squares, making sure to have a variety of colors, images, and patterns.<\/p>\n

Step #3 – Crumple the newspaper for wrapping your gifts.<\/h2>\n

\"Use<\/p>\n

To create an interesting texture for your mosaic wraps, take whole pages of the newspaper, crumple them, then lay them flat. Do this several times to get a more even crumple. Now, use these to wrap your gifts as you would with regular wrapping paper. Hint: Boxed gifts work best for this project, so that it’s easy to apply the “paper mosaic” design. And for smaller-sized items, you can also use the pages of the phone book.<\/em><\/p>\n

Step #4 – Create the mosaic design with the cut-out squares and glue.<\/h2>\n

\"Create<\/p>\n

Arrange the paper cut-outs on the newspaper wrap in a fun and visually interesting pattern. Glue them in place by brushing on an even coating of Mod Podge\u00ae or white glue. Do the same on all sides of the package, allowing each side to dry thoroughly. Hint: Leave a small space around each paper cut-out to create the “grout” effect of real mosaic. <\/em><\/p>\n

Step #5 – Complete the eco-friendly look with natural and personal touches.<\/h2>\n

\"Add<\/p>\n

In keeping with the eco-friendly intent of this packaging, finish your mosaic wraps with natural accents and incorporate a thoughtful message. In our example, we used raw raffia twine as ribbons and pretty leaf-shaped tags to send a special message of thanks. Hint: If it’s an intimate rehearsal dinner, you can personalize each gift by writing the names of your wedding party on the tags with a gold marker. <\/em><\/p>\n
