How to Plan an Outdoor Pumpkin Themed First Birthday for Fall

A first birthday is just too precious to miss celebrating, even in the midst of a health crisis. So if your little one is marking that milestone this fall, jump right into party planning mode with the cutest autumn theme: pumpkins!

Whether you go with a  little pumpkin motif or give it an autumn harvest spin, a pumpkin-themed party has so much going for it—from an instant palette of cheery orange tones, to in-season decorating elements, to fall-flavored party food and treats, all the way to fun party activities like pumpkin painting.

But here are some party precautions to consider first:

  • Keep the guest list small—maybe 8 adults and 4 toddlers max—to avoid crowding.
  • Choose an outdoor venue with enough open space for social distancing.
  • Set up the party tables or lay picnic mats or blankets on the grass far apart.
  • Have pre-packed party food boxes and individual drinks.
  • Provide a hand-sanitizing station dressed up in theme, too!

FIRST PUMPKIN DECOR ELEMENTS

Play up the pumpkin charm for this first birthday celebration by simply having pumpkins everywhere! As the party cake, in the decorations, on the sanitizing station (yes, best to have one!), and as crafty and cute favors. Come see how!

Greet guests with an adorable "Our Little Pumpkin" chalkboard welcome sign (1 – found via Pinterest), with matching paper "pumpkin lanterns" overhead. And on a small cake table, display a home-baked pumpkin-shaped 1st birthday cake (4 – seen on The Humbled Homemaker), also with matching mini cakes.

Pose for souvenir snapshots with a set of Pumpkin Birthday Decorations (3 – also available on Amazon) that include a fabric bunting highchair banner, a "One" cake topper, and a baby cone hat!

Create a DIY pumpkin stand (2 – found on Joy in the Commonplace) out of a repurposed lemonade stand. Then, use it to serve as your food, drinks, or favor display! And nearby, set up a hand-sanitizing station (5 – from Mix and Match Mama) that’s both practical and prettied up in autumn elements.

FOOD FOR A 1ST PUMPKIN THEMED BIRTHDAY

Think boxed lunches that are handy for each guest to take one, or pre-wrapped sandwiches with soup in seal-top bowls that work well outdoors. And for party sweets, serve homemade pumpkin-inspired treats and pumpkin spice goodies, then add some to the party treat bags, too!

So, it’s settled then. Your little one’s fall-time first birthday is not to be missed—especially with a pumpkin theme this adorable!
